In this blog post we look at how to even out the temperature in your house with seven tips to keep everyone comfortable all year round.

It is not uncommon to experience different temperatures throughout your house. However, while these variances are common, they are not normal. There are a number of contributing factors that can cause these differences such as sun exposure and insulation. Here we look at how to even out the temperature in the house with seven tips to keep everyone comfortable all year round.

           1. CHECK THE AIR VENTS FOR BLOCKAGES

Air vents can experience blocks either directly above the vent such as furniture obstructions, or just below the air vents like a jammed toy. Check your home to look for blocks and also ensure all the vents are open. Even a single closed or

blocked vent can affect how air flows

            throughout your home.

           2. BALANCE OUT AIR VENT AIR FLOW

If you find some rooms are freezing and others too warm, partially closing heating vents can help send equal amounts of

cool or warm air throughout the house. If you want more warmth delivered to colder rooms, you would partially close the vents in your hottest rooms. This allows more hot air

to reach the colder rooms and resolve uneven temperatures in the house.

           3. DON’T SET THE FAN TO AUTO

Most homeowners don’t give much thought to the fan setting on their thermostats. As a result, they tend to stay set to auto. You actually want the fan set to ‘on’ at all times to improve air circulation. As heat cycles are complete, the heater will keep circulating air to keep all the rooms equally heated. On auto, the fan only operates when heat is being sent through the house which actually stagnates airflow when the heating cycle ends. Although you can see a slight uptick in your monthly energy bill, your home will be far more comfortable.

           4. HAVE YOUR DUCTS INSPECTED

You could also have an issue with your air ducts. People often focus on cleaning air ducts but fail to inspect them. Heat distribution in the house can be related not only to duct blockages but often to duct leaks. Air has to travel far through your ducts, losing the temperature as it moves. As a result, if you have any leaks in your ductwork, it makes it harder to deliver warm or cool air to the areas furthest away from your HVAC system. It also puts more strain on your system which can lead to costly repairs.

           5. HAVE YOUR DUCTS CLEANED

An inspection can also tell you if you need your ducts cleaned. Clean, well-sealed ducts allow proper airflow so conditioned air reaches each room to ensure they are efficiently

           6. REPAIR OR REPLACE ATTIC INSULATION

Your attic insulation is crucial to keeping your home at the right temperature. Warm air can escape through the roof in the winter and enter the home in the summer. This could be the reason you have uneven cooling in your house or issues with warmth on the upper floors. Proper insulation will ensure your home remains comfortable all year round.

           7. INSTALL A SMART THERMOSTAT

A smart thermostat allows you to gain more control over your home’s temperatures. You can schedule automatic temperatures that adjust throughout the day, and even adjust temperatures using your smartphone from anywhere. The smart thermostat also learns to adapt to how your home releases and absorbs heat throughout the day and adjusts to improve efficiency.

These tips can help you even out the temperature in your house, but may not be effective in some cases. Do you have

When it comes to choosing a system to heat and cool your home, there are a few factors that every homeowner should

           consider:

How much will a new system save me on my cooling/heating bills?

Does the system provide both heating and cooling?

How much will a new system cost to install?

Fortunately, geothermal heat pumps score well in every one of these areas. Need convincing? Dig a bit deeper below.

HOW DO GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMPS WORK?

Heat pumps don’t operate like a typical furnace. There is no combustion, no burning, and no fuel. Instead, heat pumps simply move heat from place to place. Air-to-air heat pumps and mini splits move heat from the outside air into your home.

Geothermal heat pumps move heat from a more stable and warmer heat source: the ground beneath our feet.

           How does it actually work?

Geothermal heat pumps absorb heat from the ground via a heat exchange system called a loop field.

The loop field is a series of plastic pipe loops buried in the ground and have food grade anti-freeze circulating through them.

By refrigerating the loops below ground temperature, this liquid absorbs the free heat from the ground and sends it to the heat pump.

The heat pump concentrates and transfers the heat to your home via a refrigeration circuit, and distributes it via ductwork, radiant in-floor heat, or domestic hot water.

In the summer, geothermal heat pumps reverse this process by collecting the heat from your home and distributing it into the ground, which provides you with air conditioning.

Because heat pumps tap into an existing source of renewable heat, they are the most efficient way to heat your home in the world.

HOW MUCH WILL I SAVE BY SWITCHING TO GEOTHERMAL?

Installing a geothermal heat pump system will save you money because they are highly efficient. But how do we measure this efficiency?

Geothermal heat pumps have a coefficient of performance (COP) of 4.5, which means that for every watt of electricity required to run the heat pump, you receive 4.5 watts of heat energy output (the remaining 3.5 watts come from the heat in the ground).

To put this in perspective, electric baseboard heat has a COP of 1, and air-to-air heat pumps average a COP of 2 in cold Canadian temperatures. This means that geothermal heat pumps are more than four times as efficient as electric baseboard heat, and twice as efficient as air-to-air heat pumps.

IS IT POWERFUL ENOUGH TO KEEP MY FAMILY COMFORTABLE?

Not only are geothermal heat pumps the most efficient heating system available, they also do the best job.

Because of the abundance of heat present in its fuel, you enjoy full service heating in the winter with no need for a backup system.

The heat is more uniform in temperature than oil heat or electric heat, which means you won’t experience any hot or cold spots in your home.

The system provides full service air conditioning in the summer, which means no second air conditioning system required.

Geothermal heat pumps are also quiet, need little maintenance other than changing the air filter, and are very long lived. They last longer than an air-to-air heat pump, mini split or oil furnace and are notoriously reliable.

           WHAT ABOUT THE COST?

Because of the outdoor loop field, geothermal heat pumps are more expensive to install than an air-to-air heat pump or a furnace. You make up the extra cost and more through the long life, energy savings and absence of major maintenance bills.

Geothermal heat pumps last a long time. The heat pump itself is located inside the home, which reduces wear and tear on the system. This means a geothermal heat pump should have a life span of over 20 years. In addition, the loop field should last 50 years or more. This long life means the initial installation cost will be offset by many years of low heating and cooling costs.

Of course, every home is different, which means every geothermal installation must be tailored to the home. To find out exactly how much you could save per month on your heating and cooling costs,

If you’re like many homeowners, you’ve become more aware of the impact that you have on the environment. If this is

the case, then you’ll want to do what you can in order to limit your environmental footprint, especially where the home is concerned.

Did you know you can also save money by improving home energy efficiency? It’s why making sure that your home is

energy efficient is so important, not to mention that the more efficient your home is, the lower your energy bills will be.

The following are six simple upgrades that you can make in order to increase your home’s energy efficiency without

having to break the bank for a huge remodelling project:

           1. SEAL AIR LEAKS

Air leaks are a huge drag on your home’s energy efficiency. The warm or cool air your HVAC system produces is lost

through air leaks around your doors and windows, while outdoor air seeps in. This results in your home never quite

reaching your desired temperature as well as your HVAC system working harder and longer than it should to replace lost

           air.

           2. REPLACE YOUR OLD INCANDESCENT LIGHT BULBS

Incandescent light bulbs use a lot of energy and require replacement on a regular basis anyway, so you might as well

replace them with compact fluorescent light bulbs. Not only do CFLs last ten times as long as typical incandescent light

bulbs, they use up much less energy.

           3. REPLACE YOUR AIR FILTERS EVERY MONTH

A dirty filter will block the airflow in your duct system, which makes the HVAC system work much less efficiently. By

replacing your air filters every month, you’ll ensure the airflow isn’t restricted, reducing the amount of energy your

           HVAC system has to use.

           4. USE A PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT

There’s no reason to cool or heat your home when there’s nobody at home. Nor is there a reason to blast the heat when

everyone is in bed. You can program your Ecobee Smart thermostat to automatically change to

a more energy-efficient temperature at certain times of the day, saving as much as 10% on your heating and cooling costs.

           5. UPGRADE OLD APPLIANCES

If you have any appliances reaching the end of their lifespan, they probably aren’t working as efficiently as they used to.

Upgrade to new appliances approved by Energy Star. Energy Star rated appliances can reduce your energy use by as

much as 10% to 30% compared to appliances not approved by Energy Star.

           6. TURN DOWN YOUR WATER HEATER TEMPERATURE

Your water heater uses a lot of energy to heat up your water, whether it’s for your family’s showers or for the washing

machine. Check the temperature of your water heater. You can turn it down to 120 degrees Fahrenheit and still

effectively heat your water. Anything above 120 degrees is unnecessary. You may also want to insulate your water heater

pipes to prevent the loss of heat as the water is transferred.

OR! You could upgrade to a tankless water heater and save even more.
